Rely on our staff in Atlanta, Georgia, for
effective veteran social services.
The
Veterans Empowerment Organization of Georgia,
Inc., recognizes the
need for social services for veterans. This is the very first step
in an ambitious program that features preparing a modest-sized
residential facility that will house a substantial number of
homeless veterans in apartment-sized units. In addition, a team of
certified social workers and individual case managers will be
provided to enable veterans to obtain all the legal, medical,
occupational, housing, and financial assistance that is available to
them.
Homeless Veterans
Homelessness among veterans is a severe and worsening national
problem. A recent study concluded that roughly 25% of America's
homeless population is a military veteran. In Georgia, a substantial
proportion of returning veterans are forced into homelessness. They
reside on the streets or in temporary shelters that are frequently
crowded and dangerous. With an estimated 2,000 veterans returning to
Georgia from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan over the next four
years, the number of veterans in urgent need of housing and other
support to keep them off the streets will substantially increase.
Reasons for Homelessness
Veterans
become homeless for many reasons, such as the bad economy,
unemployment, absence of family and social support, or the long-term
consequences of trauma and other war wounds.

Helping Veterans Recover
Additionally, alcoholism and other addictions, finances, insufficient
affordable housing also add to this problem. All of these issues lack
the kind of social services that are necessary to help them recover from
their conditions.
Taking Care of These Problems
Addressing the current epidemic of homeless veterans requires a
coordinated effort by federal, state, and local agencies and other
social-service organizations.
Honoring Servicemen
We honor those who serve in the military. When
they have completed their service and made their often-painful
sacrifices in defense of our freedoms and way of life, we believe it is
our moral duty to continue to honor them for their service. They were
there for us when we needed them to defend our country, so it is now
time for our country to be there for them.
